Photojournalism Conference in Toronto, April 23-25

If you’re interested in photojournalism, documentary photography, editorial photography, or news photography, the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) is having its annual conference, Photojournalism 2010 in Toronto on April 23 -25.

The event brings together a couple hundred photographers and photo editors from across Canada and some from the USA. It’s a great opportunity to meet, talk shop and exchange ideas with others in the business. Guests speakers include several well-known photographers from around the world (speakers subject to change):

Andrea Bruce - for the past eight years Andrea has chronicled the world’s most troubled areas as a staff photographer for The Washington Post. Five of those years have taken her to Iraq and the Middle East, where she is now based. Her awards include top honors from the White House News Photographers Association which named her “Photographer of the Year” four times.

David Burnett - in 1976, David co-founded Contact Press Images in New York. For the past three decades, he has traveled extensively, working for most of the major photographic and general interest magazines in the U.S. and Europe. David Burnett’s work encompasses news, feature and people pictures, as well as landscapes and scenics. In a recent issue of American Photo magazine, Burnett was named one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography.”

Neil Turner – Based in England, Neil shoots for a range of PR, commercial and editorial clients. He is also a Vice Chairman of The British Press Photographers Association, an organization which works hard to promote photography. Neil’s photo techniques blog is highly regarded for its library of lighting techniques. His new blog contains a variety of photo information.

Kenny Irby, The Poynter Institute - Kenny is Poynter’s Visual Journalism Group Leader and Director of Diversity. He is an integral figure in visual journalism education, known for his insightful knowledge of photographic storytelling, innovative management ideas, and steadfast ethical thinking. He founded Poynter’s photojournalism program in 1995.

Shiho Fukada - A native of Tokyo with a degree in English literature, Shiho worked in the fashion and advertising industries in New York before becoming a photojournalist. She is currently based in Beijing. Her editorial work has been featured in the New York Times, Newsweek, Time, Fortune, Stern, Geo and others. Her commercial credits include Microsoft, Nike, Clinique and Johnson&Johnson.

The conference includes a trade show, of course, as well as: free camera check-ups and sensor cleanings by Nikon and Canon, (this alone pretty much covers the admission cost) and portfolio reviews by some of the top photo editors and photojournalists in the country, (again, worth the price of admission). This is the perfect opportunity to get some face time with a number of photo editors.

More conference information here. Registration can be done online (and scroll down the page). No need to be a member of the organization. Discounts for students.

NPAC is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization. Disclosure – I am a member of NPAC but I’m not involved with the conference.
