Removing Eyeglass Reflections in Portraits

If you have eyeglass glare in your professional portrait, it means your photographer failed.

In a casual selfie, reflections are excusable. But in a professionally taken headshot, there’s no reason for distracting reflections in your glasses.

Large or bright reflections in eyeglasses can make an otherwise excellent portrait unusable. At best, these reflections pull attention away from your expression and eyes. At worst, the glare can completely obscure the eyes, leaving the image feeling impersonal, awkward, or even untrustworthy.

In business portraits and social media profile photos, the eyes should convey confidence, approachability, and authenticity. When reflections block them, that connection with the viewer is lost.

Photo retouching can often rescue images affected by glare. A skilled retoucher can remove or minimize reflections, restore the natural look of the eyes, and balance lighting and colour to make the portrait look natural and professional.

But not every image can be fully repaired. If the reflections completely hide the eyes, there may be limits to what retouching can achieve. In those cases, reshooting the photo may be the best option.

It’s not just lights that can reflect in eyeglasses. Any nearby bright object can produce a distracting reflection.

A portrait is only as strong as the emotional connection it creates. Reflections that obscure the eyes break that connection and weaken the image’s impact.

If your portrait suffers from eyeglass reflections, skilled retouching can often restore it to a polished, professional standard.
