Real Estate Photography, Small Bathrooms

Photographing small bathrooms is usually a challenge. It can be difficult to get the camera into the best position and your reflection is visible in mirrors and glass doors. Plus, a wide-angle lens creates lots of distortion in a small room.

A shift lens can sometimes be used to prevent your reflection appearing in a mirror or glass door. But getting all or most of a tiny bathroom in a picture usually requires some photo magic.

This bathroom is smaller than it appears in this photo. No matter where I stood, I was always visible in the mirror.

Accurately Remove Objects From Photos

Next-day photo delivery

“And we need the pictures delivered the next day!!!”

Sometimes an event such as a business conference will want finished pictures delivered the day after the event. Certainly it’s no problem to deliver a handful of images the same or following day if the event needs them for a press release or its social media. But when a day-long event expects hundreds of pictures to be delivered the next day, or even the next morning, then there’s going to be a problem.

Let’s do some simple arithmetic. If you’re expecting 100 finished pictures and the photographer spends a minimal five minutes per image then that’s 500 minutes, just over eight hours, of non-stop work. If you’re expecting 200 or 300 photos then that can easily amount to at least two or three days of work.

That’s not cricket

Here’s an example of what happens when an organization cuts corners and goes cheap. The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants is promoting its Toronto cricket tournament which benefits school cricket teams. Good for them.

But by looking at the promotional poster for the event, it’s painfully obvious that the organizers didn’t bother to hire a professional photographer or designer. Is this poster supposed to be taken seriously or is it meant as a joke?

Filling in the blanks

Corporate photographers and commercial photographers often produce pictures of buildings, factories and retail locations.

Customers will sometimes request the digital removal of objects such as poles, road signs, overhead wires, fire hydrants, bus stops, etc., from exterior photos.

What’s funny about such requests is the customer assumes that once an object is erased, whatever was behind that object will automatically become visible. But as every photographer knows, when something is digitally removed from a photo, it just leaves a blank spot in the picture.

A timely message

Many people outside of the photo industry (and even some in the industry) are under the misconception that photography today is much cheaper than it was, say, ten to fifteen years ago. But the truth is that it’s far more expensive today, despite the miracle of reusable memory cards.

Cameras and lenses certainly get better as technology improves. But they’re much more expensive than in years gone by. Even if the purchase cost of an item goes down as technology advances, the product life cycle gets shorter which means more frequent updating. Computers and software also require frequent replacing.

Most folks are also surprised to learn that post-production can take as long, or longer, than the actual photography. Post-production includes, but isn’t limited to, image selection, raw format conversion, captioning, correcting for verticals, removing blemishes, cropping, resizing, and both global and local adjustments for colour, white balance, saturation, brightness, contrast and sharpness.

For many commercial assignments, a rule of thumb is two hours of post-production for each hour of photography.

Photography is not cheaper today. It’s just a lot better.

 

Photo Surgery

I’m not sure if this is an indication of anything but last month I received three similar photo requests. I wasn’t asked to shoot any photos but instead, the customers wanted me to fix pictures they had shot themselves:

• The first was to fix a group photo that an employee had taken. The people in the picture are now back in their respective hometowns so there’s no chance of a reshoot. The group picture was under-exposed, slightly out-of-focus, had red-eye and was poorly composed with some bad shadows. Photoshop can only do so much but the customer was happy with the results of the emergency retouch surgery. The picture will now have a happy life in a company newsletter.

• The second request was another do-it-yourself picture. But unfortunately this one was inoperable. I diagnosed a terminal case of the blurs. A photo may look okay on the camera’s tiny LCD screen but when viewed at a larger size, any and all imperfections become very obvious. I suspect the company already knew this and just wanted a second opinion.

• The third request was to pull out one person from a group photo and make it look like a business portrait of that person. This image was rushed into the operating room for some complicated photo surgery. It was touch-and-go and, sadly, a few body parts had to be amputated in the process. The photo, now reduced to a head-and-shoulders, is recovering and will be strong enough to appear in a Powerpoint presentation.

Everyone loves to take pictures and this is great for personal photos. But if your company is thinking about doing your own business photos, here are three suggestions:

(i) Don’t.

(ii) Take lots of pictures and hope one hits the target.

(iii) Know where the closest photo emergency room is located.
