Office With A View

One of the nice things about shooting editorial and news pictures for newspapers, magazines and even a company’s social media and public relations, is the variety of situations that come up.

A few days ago, this was the view from my “office”:

My subject was a helicopter flying about one kilometre (3,200 feet) away:

This was where the helicopter was flying when the above photo was shot:

Yes, the miracle of a telephoto lens, a high-pixel-density cropped-sensor camera and lots of cropping. These pictures would’ve been impossible with a cell phone camera. There were many moments when the helicopter could not be seen by the unaided eye.

Editorial photography is not just for newspapers and magazines. Many smart companies rely on editorial photos for their social media and public relations because good editorial photography always gets readers’ attention.

Editorial photography is about providing information and earning goodwill; it’s not about selling. This is why editorial photography is the most trusted type of photography.

The next time your company needs social media photography or public relations photography, don’t rely on an employee’s cell phone snaps or an amateur photographer. Hire a professional with the experience, equipment and know-how to get the most effective pictures for you.
