Nikon Canada Repairs

Two or three years ago, Nikon Canada implemented a repair tracking system that lets you check the status of your equipment while it’s being serviced. This system tells you when your gear has entered the repair process, when it’s being repaired, when it’s been completed and that your gear is either being shipped back to you or is ready for pickup. It will also tell you the cost. Sometimes you may be required to pre-approve a repair.

This system doesn’t provide up-to-the-minute or up-to-the-hour tracking. It seems to be up-to-the-day but it can vary a lot.

The problem is that the web link to check your repair status has always been wrong. Nikon Canada knows this but it’s never been corrected.

Nikon’s e-mail will tell you to go to http://www.nikon.ca/en/status or http://www.nikon.ca/fr/status (English and French respectively). Both of those links are dead ends.

The real address is: https://repair.nikonusa.com/approvallogin. I have no idea why Canadian repairs are tracked through Nikon USA.

The login process is a bit odd because you have to go through three windows. The third window requires you to accept a “Conditions of Service” much of which doesn’t apply in Canada. Also, the repair status refers to UPS shipping for returning your gear but, again, this doesn’t apply in Canada. Nikon Canada uses mostly Purolator.

Nikon Canada’s address for more information (http://en.nikon.ca/Service-And-Support/Nikon-Service-Information.page) is another dead end.

Nikon’s “service repair ranks” are:

N – no repair necessary or no repair made.

A – minor adjustments and checks.

B1 – moderate repair, minor parts replaced.

B2 – moderate repair, major parts replaced.

C – major repair, major parts replaced.

D – extensive repair. Make sure you’re sitting down before looking at the bill :-)

For example, I had a camera battery replaced and that was a “B1” (minor parts replaced). A lens that no longer auto-focused was a “B2” repair with two internal parts replaced.
