A customer (not shown in any photo here) asked to have her makeup removed from a portrait of herself. She had a photograph of herself from an evening social event and wanted to repurpose it as a business headshot. She was wearing elegant clothing and her hair was fashionably styled. The problem was that her evening makeup was too overdone for a business portrait.
How Much Makeup Can Photo Retouching Remove?
Professional portrait retouching can often reduce or remove makeup. But the results depend on several factors: the amount of makeup, type of makeup, how it was applied, and whether it has obscured the underlying facial detail.
Lightly applied makeup is usually the easiest to remove. If the makeup has not changed the appearance of the skin by completely covering its natural texture, retouching can often reconstruct a natural-looking complexion.
Heavy makeup is considerably more difficult. Thick foundation can conceal pores and other skin texture, leaving the retoucher with no original information to recover. Dark eyeliner and eyeshadow obscure details around the eyes. Mascara is usually impossible to remove. Glitter and sparkly cosmetics create additional problems.
Heavy lipstick can obscure the natural texture and edges of the lips or even visually alter their shape.
False eyelashes are problematic because the natural lashes underneath aren’t captured in the photograph.
Retouching can’t recover details that were never recorded by the camera. At best, these details have to be invented, and this can be unreliable.
What About AI Makeup Removal?
AI photo editing can sometimes create missing facial details, including lips, eyelashes, and eyelids. However, creating isn’t the same as recovery. AI may generate features that look plausible, but don’t accurately represent the person in the photo.
For professional headshots, that distinction matters. Good retouching should improve an image while preserving the subject’s identity and maintaining believable facial detail.
When Retouching Makes Sense
The examples on this page demonstrate what makeup removal with photo retouching can achieve. Some of these results are pretty good, but others are suitable only when viewed at a smaller size.
If you have a photo you want to turn into a business portrait, skilled retouching can *sometimes* make it work. But a good headshot is about more than just how your face looks. It also depends on your expression, pose, clothing, and lighting. When those elements come from a different kind of photo, the result can look noticeably out of place in a business photo.
