Balancing Uneven Lighting and Exposure
This is a basic business headshot and represents the minimum standard for a professional business portrait.
The main problem is the uneven exposure. One side of the face is significantly brighter than the other side, making the image feel unbalanced. The white shirt is also overexposed and the overall colour is too pink.
The light on the right is positioned too far back, causing the bridge of the nose to cast a shadow around one eye. That shadow makes the subject appear to have a black eye.
Photo retouching can correct these problems and make the image much easier to read. Balancing the tones across the face also allows the eyes to stand out more naturally.
This is a good example of how relatively small lighting problems can have a surprisingly large effect on a business headshot.
How Camera Angle Affects a Business Portrait
A business portrait with the subject sitting in a chair is perfectly normal. But the camera angle is critical. In this photo, the camera is positioned above the subject and points downward.
That isn’t the most flattering angle for a business portrait. It can make the subject appear passive or less authoritative.
The image is also too dark, the skin colour is off, and the catchlights are positioned too low.
Retouching can’t change the subject’s pose or camera angle. But it can improve several other aspects of the photograph.
The catchlights were moved higher in the eyes, and the overall colour, exposure, and contrast were corrected.
This illustrates an important limitation of retouching. An experienced retoucher can do a great deal with an image, but retouching is not a substitute for good photography.
Retouching Facial Hair for a More Polished Headshot
This image is a competent business portrait. The exposure and colour could use some adjustment, and there are a few distracting clothing wrinkles, but these are relatively minor problems.
The bigger issue is the subject’s facial hair.
For a traditional corporate headshot, a clean-shaven face often creates a more polished appearance. A neatly groomed moustache or beard can work just as well. The issue is facial stubble that suggests the subject simply hasn’t shaved for several days.
If you’re intentionally growing a beard, it’s usually better to wait until the facial hair has grown in enough to look deliberate. Otherwise, it’s probably best to shave before the photography session.
It’s important to know that facial stubble is difficult to remove realistically with photo retouching. Trying to erase several days of growth can make the skin look artificial.
For this photograph, the facial hair was lightened and thinned rather than trying to remove it completely. The subject still has a masculine appearance and some intentional-looking stubble, but the face and neck now appear brighter and less visually heavy.
Why Professional Retouching Matters for Business Headshots
Your business headshot is often the first image people see when they encounter you online. This makes the quality of your business portrait important.
Professional headshot retouching isn’t about making someone look like a different person. Good retouching should make the photograph look polished while keeping the person recognizable and authentic.
An experienced retoucher knows where to make changes and, just as importantly, where to stop. Skin should still look like skin. Facial features should remain natural. Eyes should be engaging without looking artificially bright. And corrections should support the photograph rather than call attention to the retouching itself.
The examples above also demonstrate something else: retouching works best when it starts with a good photograph. A skilled photographer should get the lighting, camera angle, exposure, and pose as close to correct as possible. A retoucher can then refine the image and take care of the details that are difficult or impossible to address during the shoot.
If you have professional business headshots that are almost right, but not quite, professional photo retouching may be all they need to become polished, confident images that represent you and your business well.
