Removing Someone From A Photo

Removing someone from a photo is a common retouching request for wedding, family, graduation, and business pictures. While re-shooting the photo may be the better option, it’s not always possible. In those cases, retouching becomes the only solution.

The two men could have been removed simply by cropping the photo. But if the full width of the image is to be retained, retouching is required. Fortunately the men are at the outside of the group and they overlap behind the women. The complicated background on the right side made retouching more complex.

The success of removing someone from a photo depends on how much that person overlaps with others and how complex the background is.

Ear Retouching in Portrait Photography

Human ears come in a range of shapes and sizes. Most people have “normal” ears, but ears can also be big, small, pointed, protruding, folded, cupped, lobeless, and a few other shapes.

Ears typically don’t draw much attention in a photo. And they probably shouldn’t. Ears aren’t a focal point in a portrait and, as a result, ear retouching is rarely requested outright. However, in professional portraits—especially headshots—subtle ear adjustments can make a noticeable difference.

Hand Retouching In Portraits

Hand retouching is not really a thing for portraits because hands aren’t usually a noticeable feature in the photo. But hand retouching can be important when hands are prominently featured. Eye Retouching in Portrait Photography

Eyes are important. They are the focal point, the centre of interest, of a portrait.

Viewers always look at the eyes first. Eyes carry emotion, expression, and personality. Sharp, well-lit eyes naturally draw the viewer’s attention and give life to the portrait.

Hair Retouching in Portrait Photography

Hair retouching is a frequently requested edit in portrait photography. Cleaning up flyaway hairs, filling in sparse areas, or smoothing out uneven textures, can make a big difference. Common touch-ups also include covering visible roots, refining part lines, adding highlights, and enriching the overall hair colour, to give the portrait a polished, professional look.

Remove Tattoos With Photo Retouching

Large tattoos like these would normally be left in place because they add to the person’s personality and individuality. The tattoos were removed purely for demonstration purposes—to show what’s possible with retouching.

Tattoos can often be removed with photo retouching. It’s not uncommon for customers to request this, especially for professional portraits. For instance, in business headshots, people sometimes ask to have small, visible tattoos removed to maintain a traditional or formal appearance. I’ve also had similar requests for wedding portraits, family photos, and graduation pictures.

Large tattoos, like those in the photo above, are typically left untouched. Such tattoos are an important expression of a person’s identity and personality, and they take great pride in displaying them.

Retouching Graduation Photos

Graduation is a big deal. It marks the end of one chapter of your life and the beginning of another. It’s a moment worth remembering, and your graduation portrait is a lasting reminder of everything you’ve achieved.

Graduation photos range from family snapshot to professional studio portrait. And even the best photo can sometimes use a little help. This is where retouching comes in.
