Champagne and cameras

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye. After clinching a playoff spot yesterday, the New York Yankees celebrated in their dressing room with beer and champagne. Take a look:

Notice that all the Yankees are wearing eye protection. If you look in the background, you can see plastic sheets covering the players’ lockers. Everyone and everything is protected.

My eyes were “protected” by a $6,000 camera + $2,000 lens + $500 flash. The average baseball player earns that sum in about 45 minutes.

Lessons learned:

• Thank goodness for always carrying a small plastic bag in my camera bag. Maybe I should also start carrying a plastic poncho to cover my clothes.

• If this happens again, bring only one camera, one lens and one flash into the dressing room and leave everything else outside in the photo work area.

• Every player likes to grab a bottle of champagne and spray each other across the room. There’s no fun getting caught in the crossfire.

• Alcohol wipes meant for cleaning laptop screens are great for removing sticky champagne and beer from camera equipment.

• These celebrations always look better, and more fun, on TV than in person.

• Henkell-Trocken is supposed to be a dry, bubbly wine. While I can attest to its bubbliness, I would disagree that it’s dry.
