May and June mark graduation season, and with it comes a surge in portrait photography. For many students, graduation photos become lasting keepsakes, so planning ahead matters. Professional studio portraits are typically scheduled well before the convocation. Casual family photos are often taken afterward at the school, in a nearby park, or at home.

Larger schools often partner with a photography studio to handle graduation portraits from start to finish. These studios photograph students in advance, then print and sometimes frame the images so they’re ready for pickup immediately after the ceremony. This streamlined approach ensures consistency and quality across a large group.
In other cases, schools might provide a list of recommended photographers, or students take the initiative to find one themselves. The results can vary widely depending on the photographer’s experience.
Need For Retouching
Experienced studio photographers tend to deliver high-quality portraits. They carefully control lighting, ensure the graduation gown fits properly, and check that the overall presentation looks neat. Because so much is handled during the shoot, retouching is usually minimal.

On the other hand, portraits from inexperienced photographers often benefit more from editing. Background distractions, uneven lighting, and messy hair may need to be cleaned up. Retouching may also be needed to smooth skin imperfections, adjust colour, and generally tidy up the image.
So, should you retouch your graduation photo?
If your photos are going to be viewed primarily on screens or printed in a small size, you may not need retouching. However, if you intend to print and frame your graduation portrait, retouching can make a noticeable difference.
Retouching can elevate a simple portrait to a polished, lasting memento of an important milestone.
