Retouching Political Campaign Portraits: Why a Professional Image Matters

A composite image showing 20 of 53 people running for mayor of Toronto. The above 20 headshots have been cropped to fit this composite image, but otherwise have not been edited. Slightly more than half of the 53 candidates don’t have a portrait.

Based on their photos, which candidates inspire your confidence? Who would you trust to run Canada’s largest city with a nearly twenty-billion-dollar operating budget?

Your Portrait Is Part of Your Campaign

Here in Ontario, municipal elections take place on October 26, 2026. As I look through candidate websites and social media profiles, one thing stands out: a candidate’s portrait can say a lot about how seriously they take their campaign.

Some candidates have polished, professional business portraits. Others use casual selfies, low-resolution snapshots, old photographs, or no portrait at all. While these choices might seem minor, voters form impressions quickly, and your photograph is often one of the first things they see.

What Does Your Portrait Say About You?

A professional business portrait should communicate confidence, competence, approachability, and trust. Poor lighting, distracting backgrounds, sloppy clothing, an awkward expression, or an unflattering camera angle can undermine that message.

Even a professionally photographed portrait may benefit from photo retouching. Subtle retouching can correct uneven lighting, reduce distracting skin shine, clean up minor blemishes, reduce stray hairs, and make clothing and backgrounds look polished.

The goal isn’t to create a different person. Good retouching should make you look like the best version of yourself.

Business Headshot Retouching Can Make a Difference

This applies far beyond political campaigns. Whether you’re a candidate, lawyer, realtor, executive, consultant, entrepreneur, or other professional, your business portrait represents your personal brand.

If you’re asking voters or potential clients to trust you with important decisions, your portrait should reinforce that confidence, not distract from it.

A campaign portrait, like any other business portrait, should be photographed specifically for that purpose. Reusing another picture just because it’s convenient is not a good idea. But in a pinch, basic editing and some retouching can often make a big improvement.

Don’t Have a Polished Portrait?

A reshoot may be the best solution. But if you already have a reasonably well-composed, high-resolution portrait, professional photo retouching may be able to transform it into a polished business portrait.

Your portrait photo is an important part of your campaign. Make sure it’s working for you.
