What Makes a Strong Business Portrait?

It’s crucial that eyes are clearly visible and instantly readable. Eyes are very important for nonverbal communication.

One of the most important elements of a successful business portrait is direct eye contact. Looking into the camera creates a sense of honesty and connection. It gives the impression that you are open, confident, and trustworthy. For this to work well, the eyes need to be photographed carefully. They should not appear too dark or shadowed, the iris colour should look natural and vibrant, and there should be clean, well-placed catchlights that bring life and energy to the eyes.

The catchlights in this business headshot are much too bright and they overpower the picture. Catchlights should complement the eyes and add a touch of life. They should not compete with the eyes.

Another key ingredient is simplicity. A business portrait should have no distractions competing for attention. If viewers are focused on a crooked tie, a wrinkled collar, stray hairs, or a distracting object in the background, then the portrait is no longer communicating clearly. Every unnecessary detail weakens the message. The goal is for the viewer’s attention to stay on you — your face, expression, and presence.

Retouching can correct many flaws in a weak business portrait. There’s no reason to have a low quality, ineffective photo represent you.
